Tired of Solving the Same Problem Twice? Try TRIZ.

Most businesses face recurring problems. Whether it’s a product design flaw, inefficiency in a process, or a challenge in meeting customer expectations, these issues often return even after short-term fixes. The real question is, why do these problems persist, and why are they not resolved once and for all?

This is where TRIZ comes into play.

What Is TRIZ?

TRIZ is a Russian acronym for “Theory of Inventive Problem Solving.” It was developed by Genrich Altshuller and his colleagues in the former USSR after studying thousands of patents to understand how innovation really works. Instead of relying on trial and error, TRIZ gives a structured way to solve problems by identifying contradictions and resolving them systematically.

Common Challenges Businesses Face

  • Repeated failures in innovation: Teams come up with ideas, but many don’t lead to real improvement.
  • Conflicting requirements: A product might need to be strong but also lightweight. A process must be fast but also accurate.
  • Lack of structured problem-solving: Many organizations jump to solutions without understanding the real issue.

TRIZ addresses these challenges by offering tools and principles that guide thinking beyond conventional patterns.

Core Principles of TRIZ

  1. Contradiction Analysis
TRIZ helps identify where a system faces a trade-off  for example, improving speed might hurt quality. Instead of accepting the trade-off, TRIZ encourages finding a solution that removes the conflict entirely.
  2. 40 Inventive Principles
These are common patterns found in successful inventions. They act as triggers to guide thinking when faced with a problem.
  3. The Ideal Final Result (IFR)
This is the concept of imagining the perfect solution where the function is achieved without any cost, harm, or complexity.
  4. Trends of Evolution
TRIZ recognizes that systems evolve in predictable directions. Understanding these patterns helps in anticipating change and staying ahead.

How TRIZ Helps Businesses Solve Problems Differently

  • Moves the focus from symptoms to the root contradiction
  • Promotes systematic innovation instead of guessing
  • Encourages cross-industry learning through pattern recognition
  • Reduces the time spent on trial-and-error methods

Example in Action

A manufacturing company faces repeated breakdowns in a production machine. Traditional fixes like replacing parts, updating software will only provide short-term relief. Applying TRIZ, the team identifies a contradiction: the machine must operate at high speed but avoid overheating. Using one of the 40 principles (such as “Segmentation”), they redesign the component to break up heat build-up without slowing the machine. The result is a stable, long-term fix.

Final Thoughts

Most organizations treat problems as isolated incidents. TRIZ shifts the mindset by offering a structured path to solutions that are inventive and lasting. It doesn’t depend on luck or creative bursts but provides a repeatable method to think through complex problems clearly. For companies looking to solve challenges once instead of repeatedly, TRIZ is not just useful — it’s essential.
